Day 1 - Pittsburgh, PA to Osorno, Chile

Today's summary: Miles traveled: Several thousand
Highest altitude: 37,000 feet

Well I have arrived! After 4+ hrs. of driving, 16 hrs. of flying, over 24 hrs. of waiting, I arrived in the city of Osorno, Chile, where our motorcycle adventure begins. "Our" is me, my fellow translator and friend, Rob Croese, from The Netherlands by way of various U.S. cities, and currently residing in Jennings, Michigan, and 8 other people plus our 2 Chilean guides/organizers. We begin our trek through Southern Chile tomorrow, bright and early, but before we do, a few thoughts and observations.

1. What the hell is a flying ear of corn doing hanging in the Atlanta airport? If you can tell me the connection between a shucked ear of corn in the form of an airplane and the Peachtree city of Atlanta, then you will win a nifty souvenir (OK, it will probably be a rock that I'll pick up along the route, but at least you will get a souvenir!)

2. Our group includes a group of 5 guys from the Netherlands. At dinner tonight, one of them taught me how to say "That's some cool shit!" in Dutch. It all sounds like spitting and coughing and heaving to me, but I know I can say "That's some cool shit." In Dutch. I'm sure that vocabulary will come in handy next time I'm in Europe.

3. Here is a picture of Rob and me in front of the central Treasury building in Santiago. It looks kind of like a royal palace from this vantage point. By clicking on Rob's name here, you will be taken to his blog of our trip. He is taking the historical facts, college professor approach to this blog, with lots of articles and references and such. I'm taking the kid-in-the-back-row-of-the-class approach. You can check into his blog, but you really should read mine every day - I promise you I will have more off-the-wall information to share with you!

Well, tomorrow we get into full swing, so I am off to bed. Hope you check back tomorrow!

- Bob Sette
