Motorcycling through Patagonia
Patagonia is the name used to refer to the Southern region of Chile and Argentina, going all the way to the very Southern tip of South America. As you will see from forthcoming entries, this region provides some of the most magnificent, pristine panoramas that one could ever hope to see. An excellent article is available on the Internet, by Louis Escober, chronicling a trip he made through Patagonia.
I will be traveling through this area for the next 3 weeks with a group organized by a translator colleague, comprising friends and acquaintances from the Netherlands, Taiwan, California and Michigan (and of course me, from Pennsylvania!). Our hosts from Motoaventura will guide us over highways, and more often, rural roads, crossing into Argentina several times, all the while heading south towards our destination, Punta Arenas, Chile. Though the rest of the group are avid motorcyclists, I personally prefer to ride in more climate-controlled surroundings, so I will be helping to drive the support vehicle for our trip, a Nissan Pathfinder. I just hope they don't expect me to serve as the trip mechanic - we wouldn't make it very far if that were the case. In any event, riding in this SUV will enable me to take pictures a little more readily than my fellow travelers, and so a number of them are relying on me to provide them with photos of our journey.
Through the miracle of cybercafés, trusty dial-up connections, and the occasional Wi-fi hotspot, my trusty laptop will allow me to share some small portion of our trip with you. I will try to keep things interesting, and will pepper my postings with photos taken along the way, and I hope you will check in from time to time and share this journey with me!
If you would like to share your thoughts with me while I travel, feel free to Email me (just click on the words "email me"). I will reply to messages as time permits.
